With the recent death of George Floyd, police racism has become a trendy topic yet again.

Many people are weighing in, with their thoughts on the subject.

The Black Lives Matter movement is insistent that cops are biased towards African Americans, yet others see things very differently.

Regardless of where you stand on the issue, there are several things that should be addressed.

Not all cops are bad

While there are some corrupt police officers that abuse their power, the majority are good people that work to keep their communities safe.

Most officers chose their job because they felt a need to do two very important things.

  1. Protect
  2. Serve

We must not let a few bad apples keep us from seeing that the good officers greatly outnumber the bad.

Racism serves no purpose to society

It is a ridiculous notion that someone is better than someone else because of his or her skin color.

It is toxic beliefs such as this that play a role in keeping us divided.

Everyone is equally as valuable as the next person, and the idea that someone isn’t is childish.

Rioting makes things worse

Racism is dividing us

While we all agree that the death of George Floyd was tragic and that he and his family deserve justice, the majority do not support rioting as a means of creating a difference.

A society without racism would be ideal, but it is never going to happen if people continue down the path at which they are going.

Resorting to criminal activities will do nothing more than further perpetuate the negative stereotypes that are associated with the black community.

Rioting gives a racist more incentive to be a racist. It creates more problems than it solves.

How to make a difference

At the end of the day, all you can do is be there for each other.

Let people know that you won’t judge them by their looks and that you respect them for who they are regardless of race.

We must all stand up for the rights of African Americans as well as everyone else.

Conclusion

The death of George Floyd was tragic and should have been avoided.

Although it may have brought out the worst in some, it also brought out the best in others.

This issue is not a blacks-only issue, and we should not treat it as such.

Everyone is subject to racism, and because of that, we should always have each other’s backs.
