In today’s world we have more things vying for our attention than ever before. Whether it be social media, video games, streaming services, etc. Which means it is becoming more and more difficult to live in the present moment.

Think about it. How much of your day is spent passively scrolling through social media? Or watching YouTube videos?

Probably more than you would like to admit.

The problem is that doing these things prevents us from truly living in the present moment. If all we do is scroll Facebook, we are missing out on a lot of the beautiful things that life has to offer.

Here’s a few things to keep in mind if this resonates with you.

Live in the present moment

Pay attention to what truly matters.

To live in the present moment, we need to look at what really matters. Sure, social media and Netflix binges can be fun, but in the end, they aren’t what makes life worth living.

Living in the present means acknowledging that life is short. We only get 24 hours in the day and a good chunk of it is spent in bed. Time is important. We don’t have a lot of it.

Let’s devote time to the things that really matter like:

  1. Our family
  2. Our friends
  3. Our passions
  4. Our health (mental and physical)

These things matter a whole lot more than any dopamine hit we will get from a like on our new Instagram post.

The technological advances that we have made in the last few decades have been huge. And they have been a net positive overall. But we need to use them responsibly.

The internet is supposed to enhance our lives, not take over it.

Stop living in the past.

Our thoughts are of critical importance. They either make us or break us. And unfortunately, a lot of us invest way too much time regretting our past.

This is a fatal mistake. It robs us of time that we could be using to our advantage now. You can’t change your past. It’s over and done with. If we want to create a better life for ourselves, we need to focus on the here and now.

That’s not to say the past is irrelevant. In fact, it can actually be quite helpful. We can learn a lot from the mistakes we have made.

But the mistakes shouldn’t be our focus, learning from them should be.

We cannot change what has already happened. But we can make sure that what we do now positively affects us in the future.

Stop worrying about the future.

Fretting about the future can be a consistent source of anxiety for a lot of people. But it’s important to remember that a lot of the worries that we have are often unfounded. The only thing we get from all the rumination is fear and negativity.

We need to look at things more realistically. Chances are, things are going to be okay. Even if we don’t see it in the moment.

Conclusion

Stop living in the past and worrying about the future

We need to learn to embrace the present moment. We don’t know how long we have on this earth. But we should make the most of the time that we do have.
